Sony has introduced a special edition PS5 controller and console cover themed around Monster Hunter Wilds, but it appears these items will only be available in Japan. This upcoming title is the latest installment in Capcom's beloved action-RPG series and is among the most anticipated games set to launch in 2025.
Although Sony's customization options for controllers don't match the extensive offerings from Xbox, the company has been gradually expanding its lineup of limited edition PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers inspired by popular titles. Currently, fans can find themed controllers for games like Fortnite, Astro Bot, and Concord, along with one celebrating the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand. However, the PS5 itself offers a limited selection of console covers, none of which are themed around any major gaming franchises.
With the addition of Monster Hunter Wilds, it seems Sony is enhancing the PlayStation 5's customization options. The newly announced special edition DualSense controller features a striking Volcanic Red design adorned with the Forbidden Area Research Team logo on the touchpad, complemented by floral patterns on the grips. In contrast, the Midnight Black PS5 cover boasts a more understated appearance, featuring the same logo in the lower corner. Both items are set to be released alongside Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, but it looks like they will be exclusive to Japan.
Given the already limited customization options for the PS5 compared to Xbox, it would be disappointing if these Monster Hunter Wilds accessories were restricted to Japanese fans. Since the game is still four months away from its release, there is a chance that Sony might announce availability in other regions as February 28 approaches. While Capcom is a Japanese company, the widespread availability of the Astro Bot controller—created by Japanese studio Team Asobi—was due in part to Astro being a first-party mascot for PlayStation. In contrast, Monster Hunter is a third-party franchise and lacks the same global association with PlayStation.
Monster Hunter Wilds is set to launch in February 2025, a month already packed with significant game releases. If there are no changes to the schedule, players can expect titles like Civilization 7, Avowed, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii to drop before Monster Hunter Wilds hits the shelves on the 28th. Gamers will certainly have plenty to explore in February, provided these releases remain on track.
